Barb Beach Foreign Study Abroad Scholarship

This Award is brand new as of 2021. Thank you Barb Beach for all you have done for FLAND.

This scholarship is for a current foreign language teacher/professor of any foreign language who teaches in North Dakota and is a member of FLAND for the purpose of studying abroad at a college/university/institute for either graduate or undergraduate credit or at any class or conference/workshop that will enrich the teacher's knowledge of his/her language and/or culture.

The scholarship will be awarded for up to $3000 towards necessary study abroad expenses such as travel and travel documentation, tuition or conference/workshop fees, materials expenditures, and lodging. The actual amount awarded will depend on the applicant’s expenses incurred and the available monies in the scholarship account. The scholarship should be used within one calendar year of receiving it to guarantee that funding is available.

Study abroad includes learning opportunities in all countries excepting the 50 states of the United States of America. It is the expectation that knowledge learned during the study abroad experience be shared at a future FLAND workshop/conference.

In order to apply for the scholarship, the applicant:

1) Must be a current North Dakota foreign language teacher.

2) Must have been a FLAND member for at least three years.

3) Must have attended at least one FLAND conference.

Applicants must submit an application form along with a letter to explain why he/she wants to use the scholarship and why he/she is deserving to be granted the scholarship. Send the letter and application form to the current award committee chair listed on the FLAND website (http://www.fland.org/).

The scholarship recipient will receive half the requested funds prior to study abroad to finance travel arrangements and/or application fees. Upon return from study abroad, the scholarship recipient must submit receipts from travel and the foreign institution attended and will then receive the balance of funds. If the scholarship recipient decides not to travel or is unable to, FLAND needs to be notified as soon as possible and any disbursed funds must be returned to FLAND. FLAND reserves the right to determine what is a necessary study abroad expense for reimbursement.

The scholarship can be awarded annually and can be awarded to more than one person as funds are available, not to exceed $3000 per person. Some years there will not be any applicants. Should the scholarship be unused any particular year, the money will remain in the scholarship account at the North Dakota Community Foundation until one or more applicants apply for the scholarship.

A committee comprising the three FLAND past presidents shall review applications and determine scholarship awardees. The application information and form are in a separate document located on the FLAND website. The Chair of the Barb Beach Foreign Study Abroad Scholarship Committee will receive the applications and share them with the other committee members. The committee will review the applications and determine the recipient(s). A point system shall be used to determine the person(s) who shall receive the scholarship should more than one person apply and funds are not available for multiple recipients. A recipient of the scholarship will not be eligible again for 5 years.

The due date for the application will be October 1 of the school year prior to the intended travel. The applicants will be notified by November 1 at latest of the status of their application. The recipient(s) must accept the scholarship by December 1 in order for FLAND to disburse the first payment. The scholarship should be used within one calendar year of receiving it to guarantee that funding is available.

There is a point system for determining who should receive the scholarship if there is more than one applicant and funding is not available for multiple applicants. The point system is as follows:
