2022 FLAND Summer Conference

Join the Foreign Language Association of North Dakota (FLAND) for their 2022 Summer Conference course, "Words and Actions." In this conference course, participants will participate in a book study (asynchronously) and also attend (in-person) the FLAND conference August 9 and 10, 2022 at Concordia College in Moorhead, MN. To receive 2 Professional Development credits, participants must participate in both the book study and in-person conference. 

The central piece of this course will be the book Words and Actions: Teaching Languages Through the Lens of Social Justice, by Cassandra Glynn, Pamela Wesely, and Beth Wassel.

 

Participants will read and complete the assignments outlined below. They will bring that learning to the in-person conference and work on adapting an existing unit or lessons for Social Justice. At the end of the conference, participants will have a new or modified unit to bring to their students that has the lens of Social Justice. This Unit Plan will be submitted as the final project.

 

Suggested schedule for the online component of the book study. 

PART 1: Introduction and Preparing to Teach (Intro-Chapter 2)

Week 1: June 6 (3 hours)

Read: Foreward, Preface, Chapter 1: Introduction

Do: Answer 3 of the 4 Chapter 1 Discussion questions on page 13 and submit on Google Classroom

 

Week 2: June 13 (3 hours)

Read: Chapter 2: Preparing to Teach for Social Justice

Do: Answer 3 of the 4 Chapter 2 Discussion questions on page 29 and submit on Google Classroom

FlipGrid: Reflect on Part 1; What are you thinking about your own teaching experience?

 

PART 2: Units and Planning (Chapters 3-5)

Week 3: June 20 (2 hours)

Read: Chapter 3: Creating Original Social Justice Units

Do: Answer 3 of the 4 Chapter 3 Discussion questions on page 42 and submit on Google Classroom

 

Week 4: June 27 (2 hours)

Read: Chapter 4: Adapting Existing Curricula for Social Justice

Do: Answer 3 of the 4 Chapter 4 Discussion questions on page 61-62 and submit on Google Classroom

 

Week 5: July 4 (3 hours)

Read: Chapter 5: Planning Daily Lessons

Do: Answer 4 of the 5 Chapter 5 Discussion questions on page 77 and submit on Google Classroom

FlipGrid: Reflect on your reading of Chapters 3-5: What are you thinking about your own teaching experience? What unit would you like to create or adapt for Social Justice? (You will work on this unit in August at the in-person conference.)

 

PART 3: Implications in Teaching (Chapter 6-8 and Appendices)

Week 6: July 11 (2 hours)

Read: Chapter 6: Critical Moments

Do: Answer 3 of the 4 Chapter 6 Discussion questions on page 88 and submit on Google Classroom

 

Week 7: July 18 (2 hours)

Read: Chapter 7: Self-Assessment and Reflection

Do: Answer 4 of the 6 Chapter 7 Discussion questions on pages 97-98 and submit on Google Classroom

 

Week 8: July 25 (3 hours)

Read: Chapter 8: Moving Forward

Do: Answer the 3 Discussion questions on page 106 and submit on Google Classroom

FlipGrid: Reflect on your reading of Chapters 6-8: What are you thinking about your own teaching experience? Where are you in regards to the Unit you will adapt for Social Justice? What questions do you have for Dr. Glynn now so they can be answered in August?

 

Please have all Discussion questions and FlipGrids handed in/completed by August 1, 2022 to help with grading for Professional Development credit. 

 

Unit will be workshopped at the Conference.

Final Units will be submitted on or before August 15, 2022 for Professional Development credit.
