FLAND or Foreign Language Association of North Dakota was established in October 1968. It was not the first Language organization, however. Prior to FLAND, teachers were meeting as The Modern Language Section of the North Dakota Education Association and they were meeting alongside the Classical languages. They were part of this group for 17 years before creating an independent Language organization. This occured around the same time as the creation of a brand new language group, ACTFL. FLAND included Latin and Greek but excluded English. By forming FLAND, they became an independent group, no longer a section of NDEA, but still affiliated with the organization.Â
